About
A Taste of Island History in Aiea
Since 1961, the name Rainbow Drive-In has been synonymous with the quintessential Hawaii plate lunch. Bringing that legacy to the heart of Aiea, this spot serves as a reliable anchor for locals craving comfort food without the pretense. The scent of savory brown gravy hitting a hot grill greets you the moment you step up to the service window, a familiar aroma that defines home-cooked island meals.
What to Expect on Your Plate
The menu remains loyal to the classics that built the brand's reputation. The mixed plate—featuring the signature breaded boneless chicken, beef cutlet, and mahi-mahi—is a masterclass in local convenience. For those seeking the ultimate indulgence, the Loco Moco is a non-negotiable choice, featuring a generous scoop of white rice topped with a hamburger patty, rich gravy, and eggs cooked to your preference. It is hearty, unrefined, and exactly what you need after a long afternoon.
The Neighborhood Experience
Located conveniently for those commuting through Central Oahu, this location captures the casual, fast-paced energy of an Aiea lunch rush. You will likely hear the hum of traffic from the nearby thoroughfares while you grab your takeout, but the efficiency of the kitchen ensures you aren't waiting long. Seating is sparse and purely functional, making this an ideal stop for a quick refueling session rather than a lingering sit-down affair. Be mindful of the parking flow during the peak midday rush, as the lot can become quite active with hungry regulars circling for an opening. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite before heading into the shopping centers nearby or picking up dinner for the family, this is local food served without ego.

We ordered the hamburger steak. The patties were thinner than a hamburger and it was a sad platelunch for $16. The hamburger was not homemade and the gravy was bland. Will never go back. The owners should try their own food and see if it's any good to themselves. Don't waste your money.

Went to try the Loco Moco. It was ok. I was expecting more since it was rated #1 in Honolulu Magazine. It was filling. Great gravy but not enough. Came back for the boneless chicken. Delicious, great portions. Hot the spot

Stopped by here after Rehab to pick up lunch for the husband. He likes the hamburger steak plate here with gravy all over and their fries. I normally would never miss to pick up my favorite slushie here but i had too much to carry today ☹️ but i love their strawberry slushie and sometimes i will get it with vanilla ice cream. Yum!! 😍 A MUST try! Im not a fan of the burgers because i don’t care for the bun. Its too thick & fluffy for me - i will insert a pic from previous time i got takeout from here. Shoyu chicken is worth a try. Menu is small compared to the Kapahulu location i always went to but still good. Friendly employees too which is always a plus. Will update more here in future reviews 👍
