Island Soul Food in the Heart of Aiea

Stepping into Big City Diner near the Pearlridge Center, you are immediately greeted by the low hum of local conversation and the distinct, savory aroma of kim chee fried rice hitting a hot wok. It is the kind of place where the booths are worn-in and the coffee mugs are bottomless, serving as a reliable anchor for Aiea residents looking for a hearty plate of classic Hawaiian comfort food.

A Menu Built on Local Cravings

Chef Dennis Franks has built a reputation on generous portions that mirror the hospitality of the islands. The signature kimchi fried rice is a mandatory order, boasting the perfect balance of heat and crunch, often paired with their famous baby back ribs that fall off the bone. Whether you are coming in for a quick breakfast scramble before heading to the nearby shopping district or gathering the family for a late-night post-game meal, the menu spans from traditional loco moco to house-made desserts that satisfy every sweet tooth.

The Neighborhood Energy

This location captures the authentic rhythm of Central Oahu. It feels lived-in and unpretentious, with a bustling floor staff that moves with practiced speed. Be prepared for a lively, high-energy environment during peak lunch hours; it can get quite loud, which only adds to the community-centric charm. Parking around the Pearlridge complex can be a bit of a maze during the weekend rush, but the efficiency of the service makes the minor navigation effort well worth the reward. It is a quintessential neighborhood spot where the focus remains squarely on filling plates and keeping the local community fueled.

It’s been at least a year since we ate here. (We refuse to eat at the Kailua location as it’s grungy). Anela was our waitress. She recognized us and as ever her sweet bubbly personality was evident. She is always so kind and is truly an asset to the restaurant.

Another classic Oahu, Locomocofied-portion over quality-Sysco foods slop factory. Smells like old cigarette smoke when you walk in, thought to ignore my gut and give it a shot anyways. 2 burgers, a “pattymelt” (please have the cook google pattymelt), a half serving of underwhelmingly flavorless fried rice, and 4 waters. Just under $100 USD. Burger patty’s were definitely out of a box. Their “skin on fries” were not and were clearly out of a corporate food vendor bag. My biggest complaint was that the food which was brought out was a ghost of the description in the menus. Nothing was “made” everything was heated up in the back.

Today I got to try the Kupuna Breakfast & Classic Breakfast and it was good. Also, the service was very friendly and helpful.

KUDOs. Fast service. CHALLENGEs. Parking lot is behind the restaurant; not sure if it's for the restaurant. Crosswalk and ramp are not easily accessible; leaves, branches and chickens on ramp. Getting to the restaurant is difficult: uneven sidewalk, ramp is steep and narrow for a mobility device. Meat loaf and fish sticks okay, nothing special.

I come here about once a month when I'm on this side of town. So far everything food wise seems to be good, but my favorite thing here to have that I love 💕 is the Li Hing Lemonade 🍋. Today I had the guava bbq chicken 🐔 with salad 🥗. It was really ono!!!

We were looking for a place to get a salad on our way home from Pearl Harbor. We saw this place and decided to try it. We changed our minds after seeing they're offering a lunch special for those over 60. I went with the chicken wings, fries and a small side salad. It included a drink also. My bride got a cheeseburger, fries and salad. The 5 wings come out hot and naked. All food was cooked well and the fries were delicious. Our server kept our drinks full. Our table was very crooked.

Haven't been there in a while, but the food was good. The meat loaf was flavorful. I would order it again. They have a senior menu selection. The chicken marsala was good and had a generous portion. The improvement I would recommend is to carry rootbeer as on of your drink selections.

This is hands down my favorite local place to eat in Oahu. I primarily come for the breakfast, but had lunch once as well. The servers are always friendly and wonderful. The coffee is delicious (favorite diner coffee I've had on the island so far). But most importantly, the portions are large and delicious. I go 1-2 a week for their breakfasts and dare I say....its the highlight of my week (other than getting a fresh hairct) to have a big meal and chug some coffee. It's impossible to recommend an item because I've loved everything I've had. You can't go wrong with anything here. Haven't used it yet, but there is a full bar and TVs for sports on weekends as well. Do the right thing and tip your servers. I look forward to eating here every weekend.
